What is Northeast College Prep?
Northeast College Prep is a free public charter school that serves students of all economic and cultural backgrounds with a priority on closing the opportunity gap (or achievement gap). Modeled after Global Academy, a high-performing school that is successfully closing the opportunity gap, Northeast College Prep positively changes the life trajectory path of many Minneapolis students. We believe that children and adults grow into strong critical and creative thinkers when they have the opportunity to learn alongside others with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Northeast College Prep prepares all students to be able to graduate from college, if they choose.
Where is Northeast College Prep located?
Northeast College Prep is located in Northeast Minneapolis at 300 Industrial Blvd. NE Minneapolis, MN 55413.
What is the uniform policy?
Students will wear a Northeast College Prep polo uniform shirt. Students can choose to wear pants, shorts, jumpers or skirts in navy blue, black or khaki. One polo will be given to every student every year, free of charge. This is the uniform policy. Here is the uniform policy with pictures.
Uniforms:
- NECP navy blue polo shirts (all students everyday)
- Khaki, navy blue, black or gray bottoms (pants, skirts, shorts, dresses, NECP jumpers)
- Can wear a solid color long sleeve shirt under (i.e. all orange or all green or all white; no hoods)
- Can wear a navy blue sweatshirt over (no writings or logos, no hoods)
- Must wear (or bring) tennis shoes everyday. No lights on shoes.
- Jumpers must be khaki, navy blue or black.
- Any solid color tights or leggings under skirts or jumpers (i.e. all white or all orange or all pink). No patterns.
- If your child wears pants under their skirt or jumper they must be khaki, black, gray or navy blue.
- No patterned tights or blue jeans under skirts or jumpers (including “skinny jeans”).
- No blue jeans or gray jeans.
NECP sweatshirts, fleeces and jumpers can be purchased at “Embroidery and More” at 808 40th Avenue NE in Columbia Heights next to the public library near 40th & Central.
Students out of uniform will borrow uniform clothes, uniform sweatshirts or tennis shoes from the office. The school will contact families who have students out of uniform.
What specialist classes are offered?
Every student has either Art or Physical Education each day (40 minutes) in addition to a 20 minute recess with their classroom teacher. Typically, students go to either Art or Physical Education on Mondays and Wednesdays for 40 minutes and art on Tuesday and Thursdays for 40 minutes. The Physical Education and Art schedule changes weekly on Fridays due to our shortened school day.
Additionally, Each student attends a language class every day. All students take both Arabic and Spanish language classes. Typically, students go to one language (i.e. Spanish) on Mondays and Wednesdays for an hour and the other language (i.e. Arabic) on Tuesdays and Thursdays for an hour. The language schedule changes for grades 3-5th grade on Fridays because we have a shorter school day where as, Kindergarten – 2nd grade students have language on a rotating schedule.
What grade does Northeast College Prep serve?
Northeast College Prep is teaching Kindergarten-5th grade in 2016-2017. We will grow by one grade each year until capacity is reached at Kindergarten-8th grade in 2019 – 2020.
Do I have to live in Northeast to attend?
No. Northeast College Prep is open to any student. Free transportation is provided to students within the busing zone but any student can attend, even if they live outside of the busing zone.
What do the classes look like?
There are two classes of about 24 students in each grade. Students have one “homeroom” classroom teacher for all of their subjects and they also have specialist classes every day (i.e. Arabic, Spanish, Art and Physical Education).
What is the benefit of a diverse, integrated student learning model?
We believe schools must prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in an increasingly diverse society. In addition to preparing students academically, schools must also promote cross-racial understanding and tolerance among groups and improve life opportunities for all students. Students who learn in diverse, integrated learning environments have been found to have better critical thinking skills, academic achievement and life options.
What results have been shown?
98% of Northeast College Prep families say their student is learning “a lot” at NECP and 96% of families will or have recommended NECP to other families. Many students have found success at Northeast College Prep who hadn’t found success at previous schools because of the calm and peaceful school culture, commitment to including all children, and dedication to knowing students and their families. Northeast College Prep’s first year (2015) assessment data is available. Our second year’s data will be available in Fall 2016. Northeast College Prep is a “Beating the Odds” school in its first year! Northeast College Prep is proud to be in good company as #11 in closing the opportunity gap in Minnesota. We have a long way to go, but we are headed in the right direction.

Absolutely! We support the teaching of all students. We train our teachers in how to teach students with a variety of needs and welcome all students to our school. Our Special Education teachers and English Language Development teachers are committed to the success of every student.
How does Northeast College Prep engage with parents and families?
We value family engagement and offer a variety of ways families can get involved, although family participation is not required. From home visits to monthly family nights, we believe that a child’s education occurs amidst a partnership between the school and the family; a strong partnership increases the odds of a child’s long-term success. In our first two years, many families have volunteered at the school and we have had over 80% attendance at our monthly family events.
What is a charter school?
A charter school is a public school. It is funded by the state, much like traditional public schools are funded. Charter schools receive the resources they need, given the number of children, just like all public schools. Charter schools have their own School Board and are required to be accountable to the same state measures. If growth is not made, charter schools can be closed by the authorizer and the Minnesota Department of Education.
What is the lottery?
When demand exceeds capacity, a lottery is held. Names are drawn out of all of the waiting list names to fill the available seats. Preference is given to students who have siblings at the school and children of school staff. Once spots are full, a waiting list for the current school year is created until the next lottery. Northeast College Prep will hold its lottery at the end of January. All students will be notified of their status in early February.
Are there spots available for the 2017-2018?
Northeast College Prep successfully opened in August 2014. Come and visit anytime to see how our calm school culture allows all students to learn.
Currently, we are enrolling students in grades Kindergarten – 6th grade for 2017-2018. We have a short waiting list in some grades and some spots available in other grades – please call 612-248-8240 for the most up to date openings.
