Special Education
Northeast College Prep is a public charter school. We offer special education services for students with a range of supports and services for a variety of disability areas. We use small group instruction, one-on-one service, indirect, and direct service. When appropriate, Northeast College Prep contracts with related service providers for instruction in the following areas: Speech and Language Services, Occupational Therapy Services, Physical Therapy, Audiological Services, Vision Services, School Psychology Services, Early Childhood Specialist, Traumatic Brain Injury Specialist, Physical/Health Disabilities Instructor, Developmental Adaptive Physical Education and Social Work Services.
The focus of special education is to ensure a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) for eligible students identified to have a disability and who are in need of individualized and specially designed instruction. This instruction is designed to meet the unique needs of a student with a disability through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Students must meet specific criteria set by the State of Minnesota and the Federal Government to receive special education services. Eligibility determination occurs through a comprehensive evaluation conducted by the school. If you have concerns about your student’s development you are encouraged to talk with your student’s teacher about your concerns.
504 Plans
Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, public schools are required to offer accommodations for eligible students with disabilities. Northeast College Prep provides students with disabilities the support they need through a 504 plan.
A 504 plan is a formal plan that a school develops to provide students with disabilities with the support they need. It covers any condition that significantly limits daily activities.
Schools will consider information from several sources, including a medical diagnosis, to determine whether a student qualifies for a 504 plan and what supports are appropriate. Families can request a 504 plan through the 504 coordinator. The request must be in writing. The school will then hold a meeting to determine if the child qualifies and what supports are appropriate.
English Language Learners (ELL)
Over half of the students at Northeast College Prep speak a language other than English at home. Some of these students qualify for the English Language Development program. Northeast College Prep provides instructional support for students who are making progress toward English language proficiency. Students are identified for support using the WIDA screener. Students receive support via one of several models, including push in support, small group pull out instruction, and newcomer support. Proficiency in English is measured annually through the WIDA ACCESS assessment in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
